Thematic Dossier Proposal: “500 Years of Camões: Legacy, Interpretations, and Contemporary Dialogues”

Mission: To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Luís de Camões' birth by exploring his work, legacy, and contemporary relevance through a collection of articles offering new perspectives and critical dialogues on the poet and his influence on Lusophone literature, culture, and identity.

1. Context and Rationale

In the year marking the 500th anniversary of Luís de Camões’ birth, revisiting and reassessing his work becomes imperative. Camões is a central figure in both Portuguese and global literature, whose impact extends beyond The Lusiads, encompassing lyrical poetry and influencing multiple generations of writers and thinkers. This anniversary provides a unique opportunity to revisit his legacy in light of the latest critical approaches and the cultural and social transformations shaping the contemporary world.

2. Objectives

The dossier aims to:

  • Promote an in-depth reflection on Camões' work, examining its multiple dimensions and meanings throughout the centuries.
  • Explore new interpretations and rereadings of Camões’ work in the context of contemporary Portuguese-language literatures.
  • Investigate Camões' presence and influence in other literatures and discuss the relevance of his work in the 21st century, considering questions of identity, colonialism, post-colonialism, and diaspora.

4. Methodology

The dossier will accept original articles using diverse approaches, including traditional literary analysis, comparative studies, cultural criticism, theoretical essays, as well as interdisciplinary work that crosses boundaries between literature, history, philosophy, and the arts. Contributions from both established researchers and emerging scholars will be welcomed.

5. Target Audience

This dossier is aimed at scholars, students, and professionals interested in literature, cultural studies, history, philosophy, and the arts. It is also expected to attract a broader audience keen on exploring the lasting impact of Camões on contemporary culture.

This proposal aims not only to honor Camões but also to stimulate a critical review of his work and his role in shaping Portuguese-language culture and literature, connecting his influence to the present and projecting it into the future. The NAUS journal will also maintain a separate, open-topic dossier for submissions on other subjects.
