“MEDITATIONS”: REFLECTIONS ON ANA PLÁCIDO’S CHRONICLES WRITTEN IN PRISON

Abstract
Ana Plácido (1831–1895) and Camilo Castelo Branco (1825–1890) were stigmatized by the adultery scandal that occurred in nineteenth-century Portuguese society. Convicted and imprisoned in the Porto Prison, she on June 6, 1860, he on October 1, 1860, they were acquitted and released on October 16, 1861. During this period, they wrote works that testify to the hardships of prison: Camilo Castelo Branco, Memórias do Cárcere (1862), Ana Plácido, Luz coada por ferros (1863). This essay takes as its object of study “Meditações”, a set of chronicles that integrate the work Luz coada por ferros by Ana Plácido, in order to reflect on her biography, focusing on the pains and desires of the author evident in the chronicles. The writer demonstrates that she has a vision ahead of her time regarding the condition of women, as well as an unusual courage for a lady of her time, when exposing herself to the patriarchal Portuguese society and pointing out the current social hypocrisy.
