Abstract
Since its invention, cinema has seized narrative techniques typical of literature and transposed them to a new visual code established by the use of the camera. This essay aims to analyze the film adaptation of the novel S. Bernardo, made in 1972, as a translation process, in which the filmmaker Leon Hirszman managed to relate in a critical way with Graciliano Ramos' literary framework from an intertextual, dialogic, and dialectical perspective. This resulted in an original work that was aesthetically innovative and politically engaged. To do so, it relies on some of the key concepts from translation studies, particularly those found in the works of theorists such as Roman Jakobson, Julio Plaza, James Naremore, Robert Stam and Linda Hutcheon.
