PORTUGUESE PROSE FICTION IN THE NINETEENTH-CENTURY CAMETAENSE PERIODICAL O JASMIM—ANALYSIS OF TWO TEXTS

Abstract

With the flourishing of newspaper publishing, the Brazilian public showed great interest in accessing information through periodicals, both as a source of information and entertainment, and they were especially delighted with the publications of pamphlets, a literary phenomenon originating in Europe, especially France. The publication of periodicals in the province of Grão-Pará proved to be quite prolific during the 19^th century and extended into its interior, more specifically in the city of Cametá. This study aimed to recover the Portuguese prose fiction published in the periodical O Jasmim in the 19^th century, given that this city was considered a center for the diffusion of culture in the province of Grão-Pará, since during the Cabanagem period, it became the capital of the province, albeit for a short time. Having access to these publications showed the importance of the press in the city, which demonstrates the character of the city of Cametá as a diffuser of literate culture in the interior of Pará.
