THE LIMINAL THOUGHT AND PRETEXTUAL TENSIONALITY ON THE HORIZON OF COMPARATIVE LITERATURE

Abstract
This paper presents a discussion of the notion of liminarity from the perspective of different expressions of thought in the fields of theory and comparative literature. Chiefly, the discussion is centered on the following concepts: Silviano Santiago’s the space in-between, Nerstor García Canclini’s hybridity, Alberto Moreira’s radical hybridity, Homi Bhabha’s beyond, and Walter D. Mignolo’s liminar gnosis. The evaluation of the specificities and limitations of these concepts paves the way for the proposition of the concept of pretextual tensionality, understood as a critical tool for reading autographic prefaces. In turn, the concept of pretextual tensionality helps sketch out a project of analyisis of the prefaces of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry James, and Charles Dickens, which broadens the scope of comprehension regarding the liminal and invites reflections of interest to comparatism and to the analysis of textual and generic boundaries.
