O papel da religiosidade e do cuidado espiritual na saúde e no bem-estar

Resumo
A religião e outras formas de espiritualidade são recursos pessoais e sociais atualmente utilizados por milhões de pessoas para lidar com adversidades e procurar o bem-estar e o autodesenvolvimento. Apesar da importância atribuída à saúde física e mental, a pesquisa mostra que o cuidado espiritual é um componente central da psique humana, e o bem-estar social e espiritual é um componente crítico do cuidado holístico. Se, entre as pessoas, a religião tem sido vista como uma aliada para aqueles que sofrem de doenças, vários estudos sustentam uma associação positiva entre práticas religiosas e saúde e bem-estar. Este artigo revisa uma série de investigações sobre a influência da religiosidade e da espiritualidade na saúde física e mental, no bem-estar, na prevenção primária, nos comportamentos de risco e no apoio social. A religiosidade é discutida como uma estratégia de enfrentamento, um recurso interno para os indivíduos entenderem e gerirem situações críticas em suas vidas relacionadas à saúde, segurança e bem-estar.
