Decree-law 54/2018: toward a truly inclusive education?

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the theme of school inclusion in Portugal resulting from the implementation of Decree-law 54/2018 — which establishes the legal framework for inclusive education in Portugal, based on the article by Araujo, D. & Bezerra, G. (2011), De volta à Teoria da curvatura da vara — a deficiência intelectual na escola inclusiva Educação em revista; 27(2), 277–302, which promotes a critical reflection on the potential contradictions in dealing with intellectual disability in schools considered inclusive, in Brazil, and drawing inspiration from Sennett, R. (2018), Juntos, os rituais, os prazeres e a política de cooperação (4^th edition), especially considering chapters 4 and 5, which explore cooperation in light of anthropological, historical, sociological, and political aspects. The aim is to determine, based on the articles, whether DL 54/2018 can or cannot fully meet its intended goals.
