The contribution of maintenance to company results. Interpreting cost function factors in maintenance. 18th National Maintenance Congress, November 20–21, 2025, Lagoas Park Hotel, Oeiras, Portugal

Abstract
We live in an increasingly competitive world. The survival of companies is based mainly on two key factors—cost and differentiation. Competing on cost means being able to deliver products and services at better prices than competitors, while differentiation involves developing features such as functionality, quality, delivery, reputation, and reliability. Maintenance can affect cost, quality, delivery timelines, reliability, and customer satisfaction; it’s no surprise, then, that it plays such an important role.
Unfortunately, maintenance is often viewed merely as a “necessary evil”—something to be eliminated whenever yet another cost-cutting campaign comes along. But in reality, measuring maintenance performance solely by its direct costs can lead us to believe that the only possible optimization is minimizing those costs, and even refraining from performing maintenance at all.
The purpose of this study is to examine the cost function in maintenance from a broader perspective—considering how cost drivers contribute to organizational results—and to explore its applicability to performance evaluation and the related information systems.
