THE IMPACT OF THE PROGRESS OF THE RESILIENCE OF PUBLIC SCHOOL ARCHITECTURE
Main Article Content
Abstract
The safety of people and the high value of constructed assets and their contents, as well as their criticality in fulfilling the basic needs and the well-being of communities, have always prompted concerns regarding the built environment sustainability, resilience, and reliability. The constructed assets’ resilience is often linked with policymaking and strategies for the built environment in the aftermath of catastrophic or traumatic events. It is a multi-dimensional concept covering physical, infrastructural, environmental, economic-social, political-regulatory, and organizational. This paper presents the results of applying a resilience rating system as a comprehensive and systematic holistic approach. This system can be applied to different types of buildings, at any stage of their life cycle. It analyses the resilience of Portuguese public-school buildings to different risks from an engineering point of view, namely regarding structural safety and maintenance of the school building. These schools, built in the 20th century, had long-term interventions, between 2009 and 2011, within the framework of a national investment program. The buildings were analysed before and after different types of rehabilitation interventions. Regarding economic indicators and potential investment, it should be noted that rehabilitation interventions have a positive impact on the resilience rating.
